Heroes We Love is a multidisciplinary collaboration project focusing on the socialist legacy in 20th-century European art. It involves various partners from both institutional and non-institutional sectors in Central and Eastern Europe, with an aim of relating contemporary art practices to research and involving the wider public into a reflection on socialist art in its cultural, social, and political context.

Our activities linked to this project will take place in Zagreb in 2015. They include an exhibition and artistic intervention in public space called Liberation of Zagreb. Notes for a Reconstruction by Goran Sergej Pristaš and Mila Pavićević, in cooperation with the students of the Academy of Dramatic Arts, as well as an international symposium titled Socialist Monuments and Modernism. The exhibition-intervention was based on the research of archival footages from 1945 and took place on May 8, 2014, the 70th anniversary of Zagreb’s liberation from fascism. The two-day symposium will discuss the problem of historicization of socialist monuments, both from the aspect of art history as from that of the collective history of formerly socialist countries.
